From the School AdministrationDear Belvedere Families,
Today, our fourth and fifth grade students had an incredible Career Day! We deeply appreciate all the parents who generously volunteered their time. The students were excited and inspired as they explored potential career options! A special thank you goes to Ms. Ballard and Ms. Simpson, our dedicated school counselors, for their hard work in organizing this event. Their commitment and effort provided an invaluable experience that encouraged our students to dream big and consider various career paths.
Additionally, yesterday, Ms. Walsh, our Advanced Academics Teacher, hosted a helpful parent coffee and evening session focused on the Advanced Academics continuum and the referral process for full-time services. Parents who attended had the opportunity to ask questions and left with valuable information to better support their students. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Ms. Walsh.
Finally, our next 3-Hour Early Release will be Monday, November 18, 2024. Last month, you filled out a survey to indicate how your child will go home for an early release. If you are planning on changing transportation from the previous early release (October 21), please email the office at [email protected] to change how your child will be dismissed at 1:05 pm this day.

Boundary Review Community Meeting
Community meetings regarding FCPS’ comprehensive boundary review will take place in each of the division's six regions. You are encouraged to attend the meeting in our region, which will take place on Monday, November 18, 6:30-8 p.m., at Glasgow Middle School Cafeteria.

Return Your Federal Impact Aid SurveyFCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in). Please complete it as soon as possible.
For any families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE, schools will provide paper forms starting Wednesday, November 13. Paper forms should be returned by Wednesday, December 4.
Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

Native American Heritage Month
Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native Americans. It is also a time to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges they have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.
National Career Development Month
By enrolling in a Career and Technical Education (CTE) course or program, students learn the technical applications of many occupations while preparing for higher education or entry-level employment. A core program of CTE courses is offered in every middle and high school. Based on the needs of the populations served, each school determines optional courses to be offered. National Family Engagement Month
This month reminds us that families are children's first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers. Strong family support is vital to student well-being and success.
FCPS has many resources designed to increase engagement and partnerships with families while fostering academic success and social-emotional growth.
Additionally, every school has a family liaison who will welcome and orient families, and help them understand the school's culture, policies, procedures, and practices. They can help connect families to resources in the community. Family liaisons might also assist a family in transitioning to a new school and encourage family-school partnerships to help ensure their student's success and healthy development.

It has been a warm and sunny week at Belvedere. Students are enjoying the last few days of a very warm fall, playing outside in shorts and t-shirts.
Thank you to all who came to the PTA Meeting, either in person or through the virtual link. We had approximately 25 people in attendance. PTA volunteers held a successful bake sale outside of school during election day. Thank you to everyone for supporting our school.
As you know, this year all grade levels are implementing a new language arts curriculum. It includes units of study focused on different social studies and science topics. The upcoming units focus on government and emphasize the following:
Kinder: Rules at Home and School
Essential Question: Why do we have Rules?
Knowledge Goals: In this unit, Kindergarteners will read and learn about the importance of rules at home and schools. They will talk about how to stay safe at home, school and in the community by following rules. Students will also be learning about how rules help us act responsibility, get along with others, and make good choices.
1st: Being a Good Community Member
Essential Question: Why do people get involved in their communities?
Knowledge Goals: In this unit, 1st graders will read and compare selections about people who have made contributions to their communities to understand what it means to be a good citizen. They will explore the idea that when people exhibit the qualities of good citizenship, communities become safer and more enjoyable. 1st grade will also be looking into how responsible citizens follow laws and principles that include respect for the rights, opinions, and property of others.
2nd: Government at Work
Essential Questions: Why do we need a government?
Knowledge Goals: In this unit, students will read informational texts about present-day government workers and laws, as well as historical fiction stories set during the American Revolution. They will synthesize information to build the following: The U.S. Government provides laws and services to help protect the freedom and safety of the people. People can contribute to their communities and their government in many different ways. The United States can be represented by symbols and documents. Historical fiction is a genre that bases its stories and characters on actual events and people from the past.
3rd: Government for the People
Essential Questions: Why do people participate in Government?
Knowledge Goals: In this unit, students will read informational texts about people and organizations that work to help others and ensure rights, and about the evolution of voting rights in the U.S. They will synthesize information to build the following: Participating in government gives people a voice in how their lives are governed. In a democracy, people have a civic duty to take part in government and contribute to their communities. Throughout history, people in the United States have protested unjust laws and worked with the government to gain rights and equal and fair treatment. There are many ways to participate in government, including: voting, proposing new laws, petitioning leaders, protesting inequality, and/or serving as a volunteer or worker.
4th: Government in Action
Essential Questions: How can government influence the way we live?
Knowledge Goals: In this unit, students will read informational texts and fictional stories about the interactions between citizens and government. They will build schema around the following concepts. They will synthesize information to build the following: Local, state, and federal governments have and share different powers and responsibilities. All levels of government provide services that promote the wellbeing of society, such as education, transportation, and the protection of people’s health and safety. Elected representatives, government officials, and volunteers work together at all levels of government to solve problems in times of crisis. We can learn about power and the role of government not just through nonfiction but also through fiction and fictional scenarios
5th: The U.S. Constitution: Then and Now
Essential Questions: Why do laws continue to evolve?
Knowledge Goals: In this unit, students will read selections from several informational social studies texts. They will build schema around the following concepts. They will synthesize information to build the following: The purpose of the U.S. Constitution was to outline the powers and responsibilities of the three branches of the federal government. The laws of U.S. Constitution can be added to through the amendment process. Some laws need to be amended to eliminate bias and to expand the protection of people’s rights. Citizens may petition or protest for a cause and for changes to be made to laws. Determination is an important factor in working for changes to the U.S. Constitution.
Since Veterans’ Day falls on Monday, which is a school holiday, we celebrated Veterans today. Ms. Boone, Assistant Principal, along with our Technology Specialist and Librarian, put together a slide show with photos of veterans in our Belvedere community. Additionally, every grade level engaged the students in an activity connected to celebrating our veterans.

Picture Re-Take Day is this Tuesday!School Picture Re-Takes will take place this Tuesday, November 12 from 10am-2pm.
This picture day is for any student who was absent on our original picture day (Sept. 13) or for any student whose family wishes to have their pictures redone.
If you wish to have your student's pictures redone, please send the original picture package back with your student on Tuesday to give to the photographer.

Join us for our upcoming Parent Coffee!📍 Boundary Review Community Meetings Start This Month
As a reminder, FCPS has started the process of reviewing school boundaries across the division. This important work will help the district better support student population growth, changes in school capacity, and evolving community needs. Community input is vital to this process. With that in mind, FCPS, in partnership with Thru Consulting, will be hosting a series of community meetings in each of FCPS’ six regions. Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and learn more about the boundary review process.

IEP Palooza and Community Resource FairParents/caregivers, school staff, and students over the age of 14 are invited to attend an interactive event celebrating the individualized education program (IEP) process. The IEP Palooza and Community Resource Fair will take place on Saturday, November 16, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at Jackson Middle School.
The event is sponsored by Fairfax County Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA). Activities include simulated IEP meetings, break-out sessions on the various parts of an IEP, and a resource fair to learn more about community supports. Register in advance.
Services for Hearing-Impaired and Visually-Impaired StudentsStudents with sensory disabilities require specialized services and support to access instruction that is typically presented visually and auditorily (by means of hearing). FCPS provides educational services to students who are deaf, hearing-impaired, or visually impaired. They are supported in various settings, including at their school or through itinerant specialists who travel to different schools to work with students, rather than being based in a single school. Tutoring Resources for FamiliesIs your family looking for resources to help support your child’s academic success? FCPS’ Family Resource Center (FRC) maintains a list of district employees who hold a valid Virginia teaching credential and who are available to be hired as a tutor by parents. FRC maintains this list, but families are responsible for contacting and working directly with tutors. This list is not “approved” by FCPS and is only meant as a resource.
FCPS also partners with Varsity Tutors to provide students and families with extra resources for learning. Every student can take advantage of Varsity Tutors' services at no cost, including weekly live online classes, on demand 24/7 chat tutoring, essay editing, study resources such as recorded content, practice problems, and diagnostic tests.

Elementary School Language Arts Grading UpdatesOur teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).
Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. While these skills will be new to your child in the beginning of the year, the goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.
This means that when you get your child’s progress report next month, it might look different. Your child’s teacher will give you more information on the new progress reports and how we’re making sure your child is getting any extra help they might need. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.
We will also have new ways for you to help your child practice their reading and writing skills at home. These resources are coming soon!

Lacrosse Clinic Held by Justice Girls Lacrosse!Justice Girls Lacrosse is hosting a Fall Clinic, which is a fantastic opportunity for both beginner and experienced players. Targeting girls in 5th – 8th grade in the Justice Pyramid, this clinic will feature our dedicated coaching staff and Varsity players, all focused on growing the sport of lacrosse in our community. Over three days, players will learn essential passing and catching fundamentals, offensive and defensive strategies, and wrap up each session with small-sided competitive scrimmages. The cost is $50 and includes a t-shirt! Lacrosse is a growing sport in the U.S. and will be featured in the 2028 Summer Olympics! We hope to continue expanding the sport in our community and grow our Justice GLAX program. We finished our season as National District Champions and advanced to the Occoquan Region Semi-finals for the second year in a row! We also celebrated Coach of the Year and had the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year in the National District. To say we are proud is an understatement! Our goal is to continue this success and make history each year, and we want you to be a part of it!

What an incredible week it’s been! As we wrap up the first quarter, we want to thank everyone for making this week so memorable. And this weather! Low 80’s in the end of October? It’s wild!
On Tuesday night, our Trunk or Treat event was a huge success! It was amazing to see so many creative costumes and decorated trunks, and we appreciate everyone who came out to make it special.
Today’s Storybook Parade was another big hit, bringing our favorite characters to life and spreading excitement throughout the school. A special highlight of the week was when the Washington Capitals visited a third-grade classroom to inspire our students about the joys of reading—what an unforgettable experience!
As we look forward to the second quarter, we’re excited to build on this momentum. Enjoy the long weekend, and we can’t wait to see everyone back, ready to dive into an awesome new quarter. Plus, don’t forget we have a PTA meeting next Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 6:30 p.m., and we hope to see you there!

Return Your Federal Impact Aid SurveyFCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available in SIS ParentVUE under Online Packets (in the upper right corner after logging in). Please complete it as soon as possible.
For any families who have not completed the survey in ParentVUE, schools will provide paper forms starting Wednesday, November 13. Paper forms should be returned by Wednesday, December 4.
Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important. Information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

Elementary School Language Arts Grading UpdatesOur teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).
Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. While these skills will be new to your child in the beginning of the year, the goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.
This means that when you get your child’s progress report next month, it might look different. Your child’s teacher will give you more information on the new progress reports and how we’re making sure your child is getting any extra help they might need. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.
We will also have new ways for you to help your child practice their reading and writing skills at home. These resources are coming soon!

Get Your Books Ready for Belvedere's Read-A-Thon: Nov 12-26!The PTA is proud to announce our second annual Belvedere Read-a-Thon fundraiser that not only supports our school’s field trips and classroom supplies, but encourages students' reading habits!
We have set a goal to raise $20,000, and students and families are asked to collect monetary pledges of support from friends, family, and neighbors. People can donate a flat amount ($20, $50, $100 etc.) or pledge an amount based on the number of minutes read by your student.
Detailed information will be sent home in students’ folders on Friday, November 8 and you will receive an email from the fundraising platform we are using, 99 Pledges.
If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Read-a-Thon coordinator Laura Nunneker at [email protected]. Please help us support this wonderful fundraiser by sharing it with your networks. Our Bulldogs will benefit from every dollar raised…and every book read!

Plan to keep the holiday cheer going with winter camp offerings taking place when schools close for holiday breaks and cultural observances. These single-day and two-day camp sessions run December 8-February 17.

Lacrosse Clinic Held by Justice Girls Lacrosse!Justice Girls Lacrosse is hosting a Fall Clinic, which is a fantastic opportunity for both beginner and experienced players. Targeting girls in 5th – 8th grade in the Justice Pyramid, this clinic will feature our dedicated coaching staff and Varsity players, all focused on growing the sport of lacrosse in our community. Over three days, players will learn essential passing and catching fundamentals, offensive and defensive strategies, and wrap up each session with small-sided competitive scrimmages. The cost is $50 and includes a t-shirt! Lacrosse is a growing sport in the U.S. and will be featured in the 2028 Summer Olympics! We hope to continue expanding the sport in our community and grow our Justice GLAX program. We finished our season as National District Champions and advanced to the Occoquan Region Semi-finals for the second year in a row! We also celebrated Coach of the Year and had the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year in the National District. To say we are proud is an understatement! Our goal is to continue this success and make history each year, and we want you to be a part of it!

Meetings last about an hour and are offered in a hybrid format – both online and in person in the BES cafeteria. Children are welcome to join in person at Belvedere, and there will be space for them in the cafeteria to snack, play games, use electronics, read and/or color. Native American Heritage Month
Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native Americans. It is also a time to raise a general awareness about the unique challenges they have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.Learn more about the heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.
National Career Development Month
By enrolling in a Career and Technical Education (CTE) course or program, students learn the technical applications of many occupations while preparing for higher education or entry-level employment. A core program of CTE courses is offered in every middle and high school. Based on the needs of the populations served, each school determines optional courses to be offered. National Family Engagement Month
This month reminds us that families are children's first and most important teachers, advocates, and nurturers. Strong family support is vital to student well-being and success.
FCPS has many resources designed to increase engagement and partnerships with families while fostering academic success and social-emotional growth.
Additionally, every school has a family liaison who will welcome and orient families, and help them understand the school's culture, policies, procedures, and practices. They can help connect families to resources in the community. Family liaisons might also assist a family in transitioning to a new school and encourage family-school partnerships to help ensure their student's success and healthy development.

What amazing fall weather we have had these last two weeks! We hope you have had time to enjoy time outdoors. Tomorrow is Belvedere’s first Outdoor Club family outing of this school year. Ms. Auerbach, environmental education teacher, will be leading two groups, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, for a visit to Huntley Meadows Park. There are still spots for families to join these trips. If you are interested in going to the park, buses to the park will leave at 9 in the morning and at 12:45 in the afternoon. You are also welcome to drive to the park and meet the group there. Please feel free to contact Mrs. Auerbach at [email protected].
On Tuesday next week, we will have Trunk or Treat from 6pm until 7pm. There will also be a low sensory available from 5:30 pm until 6 pm. This event promises to be great fun with students and staff in costume. We look forward to seeing you then.

Safeway Immunization Clinics for All FCPS StudentsSafeway Pharmacy will host immunization clinics for any FCPS student age 18 or younger at Frost Middle School on Monday, October 28, and Tuesday, October 29, from 3 to 7 p.m.
Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are highly encouraged to avoid wait times. A parent or guardian must accompany walk-in students age 18 or younger to provide consent. Learn more about immunization resources and registering in other languages for the Safeway clinic.
Students age 19 and older may access free immunizations at their middle/high school immunization clinic, the Fairfax County Health Department or through other community resources.
Elementary School Clinics
The Fairfax County Health Department will provide immunizations for FCPS elementary students on limited early release Mondays at their district offices. All school-required immunizations will be offered at no cost. Call 703-246-7100 to make your appointment.

Disability History and Awareness Month
In Virginia during October, Disability History and Awareness activities provide an opportunity to create greater public awareness for individuals with disabilities, with the goal of full inclusion in our community.
National Bullying Prevention MonthOctober is National Bullying Prevention Month. To help develop a common understanding of Bullying, below is the FCPS definition.
Bullying in Students Rights and Responsibilities is defined as: “Any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; involves a real or perceived power imbalance between the aggressor or aggressors and victim; and is repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. “Bullying” includes cyberbullying. “Bullying” does not include ordinary teasing, horseplay, argument, or peer conflict.”

If you have questions and/or concerns about something that is going on at school, please contact the front office so that they can support you and most importantly your student.

Happy Friday! As we wrap up another week, I want to share some highlights that truly made this week special. Our Parent Coffee was a fantastic opportunity for families to connect, share ideas, and engage in meaningful discussions about supporting Multilingual Learners at home. Our ESOL team presented invaluable information on how families can support their children's language development at home. We appreciate everyone who attended and contributed to the vibrant conversations.
It’s wonderful to see our students thriving and embracing their learning, especially as they enjoyed outdoor activities in the beautiful fall weather. The joy of learning outside adds a special touch to their educational journey!
As a reminder, this coming Monday is a three-hour early release. If you have not yet communicated whether your child will stay at school, please call the office to confirm. We are looking forward to this time, as our teachers will have the opportunity to delve into our new Language Arts curriculum, ensuring that we provide the best learning experience possible. In Virginia during October, Disability History and Awareness activities provide an opportunity to create greater public awareness for individuals with disabilities, with the goal of full inclusion in our community.
National Bullying Prevention MonthOctober is National Bullying Prevention Month. To help develop a common understanding of Bullying, below is the FCPS definition.
Bullying in Students Rights and Responsibilities is defined as: “Any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; involves a real or perceived power imbalance between the aggressor or aggressors and victim; and is repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. “Bullying” includes cyberbullying. “Bullying” does not include ordinary teasing, horseplay, argument, or peer conflict.”

What a fantastic week filled with sunshine and learning! Both the third and fifth grades enjoyed field trips this week. Third grade walked to Mason District Park and Fifth grade visited the Botanical Gardens in Washington D.C. The students were eager to share all the amazing things they saw and learned!
We also celebrated a successful first Bingo Night hosted by the PTA and the Fifth Grade Team. The cafeteria was packed, and families had a wonderful time playing together. This event will help fund the end-of-year fifth grade party. Way to go team!
We would like to take a moment to apologize for sending home the incorrect FLE Opt-Out paperwork in the beginning of the school packets. We mistakenly included the paperwork for the modified FLE curriculum. A message with the correct information was sent out on Monday. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Celebrating the Power of School Lunches
Multiple studies show that school lunches are important in supporting overall student health by improving students’ diets and combating food insecurity. Students who eat school lunches consume more fruit, vegetables, and fiber than their peers.
This School Lunch Week, FCPS Food and Nutrition Services reminds families that they are dedicated to providing flavorful, healthy, sustainable, and student-focused meals. Also, new menu items have been launched this year based on student feedback.

📚 Social Studies Basal Resources ReviewFCPS is adopting Social Studies Basal Resources for the 2025-26 school year. Basal resources are the primary resources used to support instruction in a given subject. Public review of the instructional materials under consideration — which is part of the process for selecting new resources — is underway. Visit the Community Review webpage for more information on how to view the materials online or in person.
All community feedback will be shared with School Board members before they vote to select materials in spring 2025. FCPS adopts basal resources by the process outlined in Regulation 3004.

Make Sure Your Children Are Up-to-Date on ImmunizationsPlease make sure your child has all of their necessary immunizations. Remember, all students are required to be immunized against certain diseases to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of keeping children healthy!
Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school. You can check your child’s immunization compliance and submit immunization information by accessing SIS ParentVUE.
Please check with your family's health care provider to make sure your child is up to date on required immunizations for the 2024-25 school year. If your child needs a vaccine to complete their records, make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services. SEL Screener UpcomingOne of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is the SEL Screener.
Students in grades 3-5 will take the fall SEL Screener on October 16th. Through the screener, the student provides information on their skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions.
The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create the learning, experiences, and environments students need to be successful.

• Wednesday, October 9 - PTA meeting from 6:30-7:30pm. It is a great opportunity to connect and discuss important updates for our school community. This meeting will include information about Belvedere as a Title I school.
• Thursday, October 10 - Bingo Night from 6pm-8pm. Get ready for a fun evening of games and prizes! We hope to see you and your families there.
During the month of October and beginning of November, classroom teachers will be holding Student-Led Conferences. Our goal is for every child to have a family member or significant adult with whom to share about their learning journey to date. Additionally, teachers will share important information with parents. If you have not yet scheduled a time for the conference, please reach out to your child’s teacher to do so. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

🗓️ Attendance Tip: Scheduling Family Trips or EventsGood attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.
When planning trips or family events, refer to the FCPS calendar and try to use weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.
When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence.

FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan sets five main goals to create positive change in the division. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts.

In Virginia during October, Disability History and Awareness activities provide an opportunity to create greater public awareness for individuals with disabilities, with the goal of full inclusion in our community.
National Bullying Prevention MonthOctober is National Bullying Prevention Month. To help develop a common understanding of Bullying, below is the FCPS definition.
Bullying in Students Rights and Responsibilities is defined as: “Any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; involves a real or perceived power imbalance between the aggressor or aggressors and victim; and is repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. “Bullying” includes cyberbullying. “Bullying” does not include ordinary teasing, horseplay, argument, or peer conflict.”

Parents are encouraged to accompany their children to school, and to work with their school and PTA or PTO to assemble bike trains or walking groups for the event. From the School AdministrationDear Belvedere Families,
As many of you know, our physical education teachers, Mr. Bowles and Ms. Novak, have launched a four-week bike unit. Each morning, the excitement is palpable as students arrive eager to ride. Watching them practice their biking skills in the front parking lot has brought smiles to everyone's faces, and we are thrilled to have this fun and valuable unit at Belvedere again this year!
Next week will mark Mr. Downing’s- school-based technology specialist- last week with us at Belvedere, and we will deeply miss him. While we go through the process of selecting a replacement for Mr. Downing, we are lucky to have David Greene, who has prior experience in this role, serve as substitute.
If you visited our school this week, you may have noticed a beautiful addition on our entrance wall. There is a new mural filled with roses and other flowers. Created by Task Tarea in memory of Rosa, this vibrant and heartfelt piece reminds us daily of our community’s strength and unity. We are grateful for this stunning addition to our school and look forward to a formal dedication in Rosa's memory.

Safeway Immunization Clinics for All FCPS StudentsFree Immunizations for All FCPS Students
Safeway Pharmacy will be providing immunizations for all FCPS students at no cost! Parents or guardians may schedule an appointment and provide consent for their student(s). The immunization clinics are being held at Frost Middle School, 4101 Pickett Rd. Fairfax, VA 22032, on:
Tuesday, October 8, 3 to 7 p.m.
Saturday, October 12, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Students under the age of 19, with a scheduled appointment and parental consent, must be accompanied by their parent, guardian, or another adult over the age of 19.
Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are highly encouraged to avoid wait times. A parent or guardian must accompany walk-in students under the age of 19 in order to provide consent.

Make Sure Your Children Are Up-to-Date on ImmunizationsPlease make sure your child has all of their necessary immunizations. Remember, all students are required to be immunized against certain diseases to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of keeping children healthy!
Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school. You can check your child’s immunization compliance and submit immunization information by accessing SIS ParentVUE.
Please check with your family's health care provider to make sure your child is up to date on required immunizations for the 2024-25 school year. If your child needs a vaccine to complete their records, make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or access other local services. Be wise and immunize!
Elementary School Immunization Clinics to Be Held on Early Release Days
The Fairfax County Health Department will provide immunizations for elementary students on early release Mondays. All school-required immunizations will be free of charge at Health Department clinics by appointment only.

Clinics will be held Monday, October 21, and Monday, November 18, 2-7 p.m., at the Joseph Willard Health Center, Mount Vernon District Office, and Springfield District Office. Learn more about these clinics.
SEL Screener UpcomingOne of the ways FCPS supports the mental wellness of all students is the SEL Screener.
Students in grades 3-5 will take the fall SEL Screener on October 16th. Through the screener, the student provides information on their skills like achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions.
The SEL Screener also helps students evaluate their school community’s efforts to make them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to create the learning, experiences, and environments students need to be successful.

When planning trips or family events, refer to the FCPS calendar and try to use weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.
When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence.

The SR&R document explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses. Parents using SIS ParentVUE will be prompted to sign the document when logging in to that platform. We will host the first of TWO Bingo events this school year on Thursday, Oct. 10 from 6-7:30 p.m. This fall Bingo event will feature candy, prizes and, in the spirit of the season, COSTUMES. All Are Welcome on Oct. 9The next PTA meeting will be on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 6:30 pm. We will discuss fall activities including the Election Day bake event, teacher support activities and Volunteer Night @ Total Wine. All subsequent PTA meetings will take place on the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 pm. This meeting will be held both online and in person in the BES cafeteria. Spanish translation is available for all meetings as part of the virtual format, so please join us via Zoom if you require interpretation. Children are welcome to join, and there will be space for them in the room to snack, use electronics, read and/or color. All staff and BES families are welcome to join these meetings and volunteer. You must be a PTA member to vote on any financial decisions during meetings.

Thank you for making this week so special! We had a wonderful evening celebrating the beautiful mural created by the talented artists of Task Tarea. The SEVAtruck foundation was here with their food truck to feed all in attendance, and they were able to serve over 100 meals! It was a true community event where families had the chance to connect with each other and with the Task Tarea artists.
Last night’s Back to School Night was successful. Families were excited to learn more about what students are experiencing at school. We were also fortunate to have many interpreters available to assist families. Thanks to all of you; it was a truly special evening.

Family Resource Center NewsThe Family Resource Center (FRC) offers free webinars, confidential consultations, a lending library, and resources to help adults support the success of all students, including those with learning challenges, special needs, and disabilities. The center was formerly named the Parent Resource Center.
The office hours are from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday - Friday. We encourage families and staff to make an appointment for consultations, especially when requiring an interpreter.

From the PE Department:
We are very excited to bring back our Bike Safety unit to Belvedere. We will start our unit on Monday, September 23rd. If your child has a helmet we highly encourage them to bring their helmets to school on their PE days. Students do have the option of bringing their own bike from home on their PE days. If your child is bringing their bike to school they can bring it right to the gym in the morning and we will label it and put it on the side for them but they must take their bikes back home the same day. Please NO training wheels! Students will not only learn how to ride a bike but rules of the road, how to ride through different terrains, hand signals etc. If you would like to volunteer to help assists student please sign up with our signup genius.

Students to Be Surveyed on Social-Emotional LearningFCPS is committed to supporting the mental wellness of all students. The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener helps our students share their perspectives on how their schools and communities support them and help them develop the skills they need to succeed.
The screener is offered to all students in grades 3 through 12 in the fall and spring. It addresses skills such as achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. Screener data is used to plan programming for the division, schools, and individual students.
After each screening, results will be available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE and mailed to families who don’t have a ParentVUE account. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage.
Families who wish to opt their child out may do so by completing the opt-out form in the Annual Notice packet or SIS ParentVUE. For more information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener webpage or contact our front office.
Please note that the SEL Screener is not the same as the anonymous Fairfax County Youth Survey, which will take place later this fall.
Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health
Children go through a lot of changes, and it can be hard to tell if their behavior is developmentally appropriate or if they could benefit from mental health support. It’s important to talk to your child and pay attention to their actions, especially these warning signs:
If you notice any of these warning signs or feel your child may be experiencing a mental health challenge, help is available. Please contact Paige Simpson, our School Counselor at [email protected], to discuss your concerns and identify resources. Find additional ways to support your child’s wellness.
If you or someone you care about is experiencing a mental health crisis such as thoughts of harming themselves or others, please take action right away. Call 988, go to the nearest emergency room, or contact the Sharon Bulova Center for Community Health Emergency Services at 703-573-5679.

Family Literacy ProgramJoin FCPS’S Family Literacy Program and help your child succeed. Learn English, connect with your community, and become a partner in your child's education. This is for adults who want to learn English.
The Family Literacy program is free to families. Classes meet twice a week for two hours.
This program is yearlong. Students are expected to attend both the fall and spring classes.

🔍 Lightspeed Parent Report on Child’s Device ActivityFCPS has tools to help parents know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided at no cost to families by Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service.
Parents may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites your child visited. The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for free access to the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.

🤒 When a Student Should Stay Home From SchoolWhether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.
Help your child succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your child stays home if they are sick. Visit our website for information on when to keep your child at home.
If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher so that assistance can be provided if needed. Keep an open line of communication with your school's public health staff.

New October PTA meeting date: Oct. 9Due to the October student break, the next PTA meeting will be on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 6:30 pm. We will discuss fall activities including Bingoween, the Election Day bake event, teacher support activities and Volunteer Night @ Total Wine. All subsequent PTA meetings will take place on the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 pm. This meeting will be held both online and in person in the BES cafeteria. Spanish translation is available for all meetings as part of the virtual format, so please join us via Zoom if you require Spanish support. Children are welcome to join, and there will be space for them in the room to eat dinner, use electronics, read and/or color.
All staff and BES families are welcome to join these meetings and volunteer. You must be a PTA member to vote on any financial decisions during meetings.
The fifth grade class – with support from their incredible teachers – will host its first of TWO Bingo events this school year to raise funds for their end-of-year festivities and a class gift. This fall Bingo event will feature candy, prizes and, in the spirit of the season, COSTUMES. Mark your calendar for 6-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10. Back to School Night!Belvedere will be hosting our annual Back to School Night tonight, Thursday, September 19th from 6-8 pm.
Join us to visit your child's classroom, meet their teachers, and learn more about the IB PYP program. We will offer two teacher presentation time slots, including time for questions, from 6:30-7:00 pm and 7:15-7:45 pm. Spanish interpretation will be available throughout the evening, and there will be family resources available as well.

What a wonderful week it has been, filled with five full days of learning and growth! We’d like to take a moment to highlight the beautiful new mural from Task Tarea that now brightens our hallways. It’s a vibrant addition, and we owe a big thanks to our talented art teacher, Ms. Guzman, for coordinating and spearheading this amazing project. A big shoutout goes to our amazing PTA for hosting our first Movie Night of the year! We had a fantastic turnout, and it was a joyous evening for families and students alike. Your continued participation in these events makes all the difference in building a strong school community.
This week also brought some challenges, as we received the sad news of the passing of our beloved Spanish teacher, Ms. Carames. We know this has been a difficult time for many, and we want to thank everyone for the incredible support, compassion, and care you've shown. The strength of our Belvedere community truly shines in times like these, as we come together to support one another.

Calendar Reminder: Early-Release MondaysThe first 3 hour early-release Monday is on September 16th. Students will be dismissed at 1:05 pm. If you completed the Childcare Needs Form, your child will be provided with supervision and be dismissed at our usual time at 4:05 pm.

Please check with your healthcare provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up to date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia. Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.
You may check your child’s immunization compliance and submit their immunization record in SIS ParentVUE. Records may also be delivered to your school’s front office.

Families can easily grant permission for their children to access a variety of school resources through the Parent Digital Consent system. Parents can opt their child in or out of resources including online educational tools, school counseling services, and tutoring services. Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R)
The SR&R document explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses. Parents using SIS ParentVUE will be prompted to sign the document when logging in to that platform. 🍽️ Fueling Student Success: New Food Options Cooked up at FCPSStudents will have more than a dozen new options for lunch and breakfast in school cafeterias starting this week. New menu items were either favorites at last year’s food show — including Korean BBQ wings, sweet Thai chili wings, chicken tikka masala, and barbacoa street tacos — or were tested with student focus groups and tastings.

Movie Night Success!
Thank you to all the families who attended our first Movie Night of the 2024-2025 school year! An extra shoutout to the volunteers who were extremely helpful. From making popcorn to selling concessions, making lemonade, setting up, and cleaning up, we couldn't have done it without them!

We will set up tables just outside the front entrance at Belvedere, which is a polling spot for the area. We have tons of opportunities to help from 6 a.m.-8 p.m., and you can also donate (or “purchase” – we take suggested donations) baked goods or rolls of wrapping paper.
Join us Oct. 22 to learn about PTA volunteer roles (and wine!)Save the date: Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 6:30-8pm is Volunteer Night at Total Wine at the Plaza at Landmark. This adults-only gathering includes light refreshments and wine tasting, as well as nonalcoholic options.
